Play Dough Recipes

It's a fact of life that children love to play with play dough. Instead of purchasing the store-bought kind, here are some recipes for you to make some on your own with ingredients you probably have in your kitchen right now!

Oatmeal Playdough

Ingredients
  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
Directions
  1. Mix the oatmeal, flour, and water together.
  2. Kneed the dough until smooth.

 

Cooked Playdough

Ingredients
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • food coloring or koolaid for color
Directions
  1. Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan.
  2. Heat the mixture on low stirring constantly until the dough forms a ball.
  3. Remove the dough from the heat and knead until smooth.

 

Salt Playdough

Ingredients
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
Directions
  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Kneed the dough until smooth. This will take around 10 minutes.
  3. This type of dough can be baked at 250 degrees to preserve your child's creations. The creations can then be painted if you desire.

 

Cinnamon Applesauce Playdough

Ingredients
  • 1 cup applesauce (store-bought applesauce works better than homemade)
  • 1 cup cinnamon
Directions
  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Kneed the dough until smooth.
  3. You can use cookie cutters to create your own cinnamon ornaments. The ornaments will take about 2 days to dry and you should flip them over a few times to help them dry better.

 

Gingerbread Playdough

Ingredients
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp each of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger (Add more or less depending on your preference)
Directions
  1. Combine the dry ingredients together in one bowl.
  2. In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients (the oil and water).
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix throughly.
  4. Heat the mixture over low heat for 3 minutes or until the mixture gets a dough-like consistency.
  5. Kneed the dough until smooth.

 

Peanut Butter Playdough

Ingredients
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup honey
  • 2 cups powdered milk
Directions
  1. Mix the ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Kneed the dough until smooth.
  3. This play dough is completely edible which makes it great for young kids.

Soap Playdough

Ingredients
  • 8 ounces melt & pour soap base
  • 3 tablespoons glycerin
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Few drops of fragrance oil
Directions
  1. Melt the soap base in the microwave or a double boiler.
  2. Add the glycerin, cornstarch, and fragrance oil to the melted soap base and stir throughly.
  3. Continue to stir the soap dough until it gets thick and stiff.
  4. Knead the dough on a piece of waxed paper until it reaches a play dough like consistency. Add additional cornstarch if it sticks to reach the correct consistency.
