Instructions

  1. Cover your entire work surface with newspaper. Mosaics can be messy!
  2. The next step is to start breaking your tile. Click here to learn about the two different methods of breaking tile.
  3. Once your tile is broken, it's time to begin applying tile to your votive holder. Place a small amount of tile adhesive on the back of your tile using a popsicle stick.
  4. Next, place a small dab of glue on the spot of the votive holder where you'd like to place that particular tile. Firmly press the tile onto the votive holder.
  5. In this manner, cover the entire votive holder with tile. The tile glue will begin to dry in about 5 minutes. During this time, you will be able to make small adjustments to get your mosaic just right. You may want to do small sections of the mosaic at one time allow it to dry and then continue with the next section.
  6. Allow the tiles to dry overnight to make sure that they are completely set.
  7. The next step is to apply the grout. Each votive cup will take about 4 tablespoons of dry powdered grout. Mix this with about 2.5 tablespoons of water in a disposable cup. Mix the grout throughly until you get a nice thick paste.
  8. Use a popsicle stick to apply spread the grout over the tiles and between the crevices. Carefully work the grout into the crevices until the grout is level with the tiles. Try spreading the grout in one direction and then in the other to get a good flat coverage.
  9. Allow the grout to begin to dry for about 15 minutes.
  10. Slightly dampen your sponge and gently wipe across the tile surface. Continue to do this until you have removed all excess grout from each tile. You will need to rinse the sponge several times while you work.
  11. Allow the votive holder to dry overnight. You can then polish the tiles with a cloth and a dab of vegetable oil to get a nice shiny finish.
